Looks nice! Although, it looks a lot more cartoony than I thought it would. Especially considering how realistic the monster itself looks.

I feel very similarly. Separately the designs each look great, together they do clash in a way that imo is aesthetically displeasing. Usually when I encounter this I choose to not even give the game a chance (as despite its potential for fun and engaging gameplay, the artwork prevents me from enjoying the overall experience). My only other criticism is that the borders are very thick and take away from valuable image and text box space. This is obviously all opinion, and if my opinion is in the minority then it shouldn’t be a concern. Because I believe in the goals and values of thise game and its designers I will still give it a shot, though I fear that some design elements may more likely than not turn me back to Hearthstone. I don’t love the fact that I’ve spent $1-$2 thousand on hearthstone in the last three years,… Read more »

I think the cartoony look is great. I agree the contrast is jarring, but I would pose that card games are by nature a far less intense type of game than those typically portrayed in a more gritty art style. I would suggest making the character look equally cartoony, simplify the design of the character so you get the point across without being too much to look at.

I agree it does look cartoons but I want the character to stay equally as real as the one shown. Maybe an equilibrium can be reached.

I agree the monster looks a bit to realistic. Especially in contrast with the card.

Yes this was a point I was going to make. The character design is hyper-realistic and then the card design is a bit cartoony and similar to what you would see in a flash game. The best card design would either scrape back on the actual monster and alien designs and make them less realistic to match the level of art on the background, or make the card back design more enhanced and realistic looking with many different textures to balance things out.

Yha it looks really cool and don’t get me wrong but the cartoon look of the sides and the real look of the character looks a bit odd.

I worry about the frame looking a bit cartoonist next to the more realistic looking character, but I like the overall feel, and I love the flavor text

I agree. This appears to be a common concern so far. Imo it may be in the designers best interests to take both elements and meet in the middle – little more detailed and defined on the card frame, little more cartoony on the card art. Then both elements will blend and compliment each other without conflicting aesthetics that might feel forced or unatural in this environment.

You guys can make money by selling “golden” animated versions of the card. But obviously hearthstone does golden, i think like platinum would fit your aesthetic!

As for the card design, it looks bitchin and it’s not too much in the right way.

Really excited for this game! The way you’re going about the development is really focusing on the product and the game rather than a money grab which is why I’m so excited for this and want it to be successful.

In regards to the look of the card I think it looks really simple and Sci-fi like you were aiming for, but I can’t get over the the juxtaposition of the cartoon with the high quality image on the card. I know I’m not the first comment to say this, but I think a good solution would be to make the characters a little more cartoonish since I feel like the game isn’t meant to be super serious. That way the picture fits the card theme better.

I like the shape and idea behind it, but I feel the lack of texture and depth draws away from the incredible artwork in the center. If it were me, I would make the silvery border more “gritty”. add a little shadow, scratch it up a bit – these are battle hardened monsters! The fights they have been in can be reflected on the card border with a claw rend here or a bullet wound there, even just some light scratching to add that texture. As for the cost/health/damage counters, they too could benefit from some kind of touch up. Like starting darker on the outside of the symbol and gradually getting brighter towards the middle to put emphasis on the fact that the number in the middle is what you should be looking at I know you probably will get hammer by comparisons to hearthstone – so I’ll try… Read more »

I also worry about the card design being too cartoonish as well. it doesn’t fit with the realistic looking alien that you have shown with it. maybe a metal sci-fi that looks more dusty and rust-like and has more attitude?

I think it looks awesome. It looks very techi/sci-fi ish . The alien artwork is flipping great . I just hope you guys don’t rush the game out because of demand . Releasing a game before it was ready has been a few companies downfall . anyways ..great design . keep up the good work

I know it’s an early prototype, but the card structure itself (the concept of cost, attack, health, and the relative values) seem very similar to Hearthstone and Shadowverse. I play both of those games (as well as Magic and Yu-gi-oh) and enjoy them all in their own ways, but I’m thinking it would be appealing to have a fresh feel and not have it come across as a “more accessible version of Hearthstone with a fun new mechanic” (which Shadowverse essentially is) – unless that’s what you’re going for.

And I mean that in a respectful and constructive way to both your game and to Shadowverse =)

I think the triangle at the top leaves little room for higher cost cards (double digit or so) so a different shape would be good (like a trapezoid or maybe just a larger triangle)

I agree with LittleMuffin (below), I think the monster is way too realistic for the card design but the card design looks great. It’s just a matter of which one to change a bit to fit in with either the portrait or the card design.

I think it’s pretty cool looking! But like a few others I think it’s a bit too cartoony for the serious art, or maybe the other way around. Maybe we would have to see the cards on the board before I can give a super fair opinion, but it is important to not make things look too distinct in that manner, and therefore awkward.

Doesn’t seem like the card design and character art jive; like they are of two different universes. I do like the simplicity but maybe the card design could be less ‘cartoon realness’ and more ‘realness’ to vibe better with the creature art?

The only way that I can describe it is ready defined; simple and clean. Everything that’s important is highlighted and easy to see. Well done!

I agree with other comments on how the card border doesn’t match the art style of the alien. Other than that… Great card design.

I want to address the flavor text. Please respect the “new to card games” player base. I remember getting very lost when i see a deck full of long effects and extra’s that don’t really matter. The name section is enormous and the flavor text takes up the majority of the center of the card. A format that involves shrinking the flavor text and moving it to the side, or removing it entirely from being on the card’s face are preferred.

As an aside, I’d LOVE to see more artwork on the cards, something I know me and my cousin can’t stand about other of these popular card games. Let that beautiful artwork show!

Nice, definitely gonna use that alien. One question. Is rarity shown on that card? Is it epic or whatever The other one was called?

I think that a slightly less cartoon style border (maybe thinner, too) would fit better. It would be nice to see some more variation though, so we could get an overall idea if all characters will have a similar art style, or if it varies some (and to what degree). The believe the bright green may make it seem more cartoony, as well. Can’t wait to see more, and any changes you make to what we’ve already seen!

Man, y’all got me with that sci-fi orc. I thought, “I thought this is what y’all were trying to get away from!” Good one.

The card looks fine to me. Compared to the orc, it doesn’t look cartoony to me. I think the background will go a long way with how I feel about the overall look of the cards, too.

Thanks for sharing and being involved in the comments! Super excited for the scifi, mobile, resource based, non pay to win focus of the game. My thoughts are that card art is critical to the game so a thinner boarder would help with the juxtaposition. Maybe a texture if it doesn’t cost optimization. It’s hard to tell off one example. Another thing could be to move away from the “stats right triangle” to further deferentiate you from the juggernauts that are hearthstone and the new MTG online. Best of luck during development can’t wait to see some mechanics!

Luke would SMOKE Anakin easily. But about the card design, I like it. It’s familiar to my current favorite CCG Hearthstone, yet different in a unique way. I hope there is some type of card effects.

From an artist standpoint, I find the 2 styles of art to clash. The realism with the simple border of the card just don’t mix well. Not to say it is all flawed though, i just feel it needs more of a realism to it. Perhaps some brushed metal and thinner border design would do it justice. My opinion, and that’s all it is, is that I would also change the font to something a little less cartoonish in exchange of a more professional looking font. Overall just some small things that could really pop to bring the cards to life a little more.

Hey man, got to say love the card art, if I’m being totally honest I think the card design does clash a bit but I’m sure we’ll get used to it, I think the design in and of itself is grate. I have a question though, considering the fact that all your cards are going to be free, does that mean the app will have a base price? And if so do you have a rough estimate yet?

Visual feedback:
The cards design looks out of place compared to the alien design, although I do like the realistic look of the alien.
The attack value symbol doesn’t look right to me.
Will there be faction/class specific cards, and if so, how will the card design differentiate between them?
Design feedback:
There will be keywords to define common effects, right?
Will cards have flavor text?

I really like how you are showcasing each step of the way and asking for feedback. Can’t wait to see the next reveal.

I love both the card elements and the creature portrait… just not both of them at the same time. Why mix genres? Either stick with a cartoony feel or go full-on MtG with your card art. Thank you for including us in the process!

The color scheme looks really great. Will different races or types of cards have different colors to their names or will all the cards have silver and green? The black outline of the card is a bit thick, giving the card a bit more of a cartoonish look.I think keeping the outline a thin consistent border would really make it look clean. Also I would personally change the font of the of what the card can do to something a little sharper just to keep the visual of a clean uncluttered card.

Love what you’re doing and I hope I’m not being too nit picky. Keep it up!

While I think the card looks good there’s just something not right about it. I think maybe it’s because the simple design of the card seems to clash with the more realistic tone of the illustration. I’d say make the frame look metallic, with some weathering/rust. The icons could also be what is throwing me off; the bomb and the heart. If you need to use iconography to denote these stats I would suggest a fist. I’ve played a few games where the icon actually indicated an inherit effect (range, splash (i.e. explosion)) of a character’s attack. So I would go with something else, like a fist. Instead of a heart, which reads as fantasy, I’d go with a cross. Just color it green, instead of red. Alternatively, you could go away from the icons and just color the numbers. Red for the attack and green for life.

I think that your attack design decision is very good food for thought, and hope that this gets much discussion. Also, I accidentally flagged this answer while clicking for the one above and was very disappointed to find out that I couldn’t undo it. I hope that this could be fixed and/or that the function could be explained as well. I also wish that this website would have accounts for frequent visitors so that I wouldn’t have to receive all of the notifications in my email.

Based on what you already said, you’re working on “plasma” versions of cards, right? Well, one thing that I always wanted from a game like Hearthstone, was to make any deck I wanted with full card availability, but that I would be perfectly fine with the “Golden” version of cards to be behind RNG, like for example, a small chance after every game, won or lost. Being that people can play the base game at it’s full potential and competitiveness with full card availability, going slight wild with how you want to give out Golden copies of cards, basically like Skins in games. Perhaps Golden Fragments instead, to be dismantled if it’s the wrong card and/or simply crafted into a card of their choice with different fragment numbers.

Great job with card art, I wish the artists the best of luck designing entrance animations for the cards, and GL!

I haven’t seen much on this but personally I feel like the attack symbol could be abit better, rather than just looking like a purple thing that vaguely resembles a bomb(?) I feel like there could be something that could fit better, maybe a Galaga style space ship, or a turret, or something else.

Also if you do put flavor text on a card, please make sure that you can tell the difference from abilities or effects. For example: MTG italicizes it, and Hearthstone puts it in a smaller font, on a separate form, and only visible when inspecting the card.

Dear Able Apes, I feel like the attack symbol (or the bomb) is a little complex compared to the rest of it being a pretty simple design. Also I would like to see how rarities play a part in the card design. One thing I would like to add, although unrelated, is how I feel about getting good cards. Rather than pay to win, as this game is based around skill being the biggest role, you should be able to earn cards by winning more games. I know it was advertised that some people are getting tired of RNG but I feel like there should be an RNG based card earning system along with the winning to play more. In order to avoid RNG being the core of the game, you should make the “packs” cost a lot of the in-game currency so that getting a legendary will take more… Read more »

Even though I am not a developer, on a different comment, other threads, and a video by the devs, it is stated that all of the cards are supplied to the player from the start. I don’t know if that is a rigid decision, but it seems like the pack problem won’t be an issue. It also seems that the difference in the two card rarities will be in the top right corner. There are still rarities, however, due to the fact that there will be a limit to how many of the higher rarity cards can be put in your deck. Hope this helps, and as this is a crowd-building project, this could all be subject to change.

I’ve read other comments and I agree with most of them, but may I also add that the card looks a bit too bulky maybe if you slim some aspects of the card such as the border, it will give it a much cleaner and sleek look. Also, I love the artwork reminds me of a starship troopers theme.

The artwork blew me away! That being said I do not dislike the cartoony style of the card but it does feel just a little off. I think possibly if you slim down the boarder on top that is surrounding the card art and possibly change the name text box so that it does not jut into the art that might improve the look.

Ola!
For me, I don’t really care about the cartoony look. As long as the characters themselves have beautiful art (which they seem to have).
Anyway, I was wondering: are you planning on using keywords and icons? Reading long lines of text is a bit awkward for me.
Keep up the good work!

I have to agree with most of the stuff I’ve read here: I like the idea of where this card is going, but it feels a bit too cartoony. I’ve got an idea of some changes to make, and if I have some time later today, I’ll take the shown design, mod it a bit and post a picture.

I know since you’re going for mobile optimization, you’ll want to get all the textures fairly low, but still crisp looking, so I’ll try to keep that in mind.
